Use this page to find the key lessons, assignments and projects for Film 12.

1. Introduction to Film - WEEK 1, Sept 2 - 5

In this lesson we will cover the basic structure of the Media Course. You will tell me a little about yourself in the Who Are You assignment, look at the course syllabus and learn the basic expectations of students in this class.

2. ​Production Company Name & Logo - WEEK 1, Sept 2 - 5

Create a company name and logo for your credits/title sequences for each of your films that you Direct.  Submit the design to the Digital Hand In Folder​. Please note: all your films must include Rapids Productions as well as your own. Please give credit to the school that provides you with the equipment and training to complete your productions! Many films have multiple production companies working on the film.

3. Setup Filmography Site - WEEK 1-2, Sept 2 - 12

Go to the Filmography page and start your Filmography site. You don't need to finish the site but it must be started and include your filmmaker statement along with the general layout. Make sure you submit the URL by the end of week 2.

3. Advanced Camera Settings - WEEK 1-2, Sept 2 - 12

Watch the video Canon Rebel Camera Tutorial to learn all the settings of your camera. You may find it beneficial to follow the video using your camera at the same time. Film 12 students will have complete a short quiz based on this video AND the tech workshop!

4. Camera Parts - Individual Assignment - WEEK 1-2 Sept 2 - 12

​Learn the important parts for shooting on your camera  by completing the Camera Parts Assignment. For those shooting on Canon, complete the Canon Parts Assignment. For those shooting on Nikon, complete the Nikon Parts Assignment. Try completing as much as you can without looking up each part. Then, take a look at the manual for your camera - Nikon Manual or Canon Manual​.

5. Camera Safety and Procedural Presentation - WEEK 2, Sept 8 - 12

​Camera safety is paramount to continuing to offer Photography at Riverside. In this presentation, you will learn the procedures for borrowing a school camera and how to use it safely. After this presentation, there is a Safety Procedures Test that you must attain at least 80% in order to borrow a camera. Any questions you get wrong, must be corrected in full answer and handed in. You can review the Procedural Presentation Notes​ prior to completing the quiz. Please Note: You must have handed in your signed Photography Contract prior to  borrowing any equipment.

6. Tech Workshop - WEEK 2, Sept 8 - 12

Learn the basics of setting up your camera before you do your first photo shoot. In the tech workshop, we will setup the camera and get comfortable with it's settings. You may view the Tech Workshop Notes here.

7. Camera Video Setup (Research) - WEEK 2, Sept 8 - 12

Find a short video on Youtube outlining the proper settings for shooting video on the camera of your choice. Review the video with your camera in hand, following the various settings and setup.

8. Know Thy Camera Assignment -  WEEK 2, Sept 8 - 12

With the camera you have chosen, complete the Know Thy Camera Assignment.  You may work in pairs IF you are planning on using the same camera! Edit the Know Thy Camera Assignment so that you have 5 seconds of each of the listed shots and a title overlay for each.  Export the movie and copy it to the Film 12 Hand In Folder on the Network. 

9. Film Sequence #1: The Jump Scare - WEEK 3, Sept 15 - 19

Toward the middle of your preproduction week, you will receive a small shooting assignment (a sequence) with a goal of learning a particular aspect of filmmaking. Your instructor will elaborate on what it is during that week.

10. Class Film Shoot - WEEK 3, Sept 15 - 19

Complete all outdoor scenes.

11. Show Off Your Editing Skills - WEEK 3-4, Sept 15 - 26

Show off your editing skills by downloading Terminator Movie Stock Footage and create a custom movie trailer (Mirror Site). Your trailer must be no less than 1 minute, contain at least one movie trailer voice (in download file), contain at least 2 custom titles, 2 transitions, and a great sound track!

13. Project #1 -  WEEK 4-6, Sept 22 - Oct 10

Choose a project category of your choice to explore during this film (see the list at the left). Note: your first 3 projects must all come from different categories; see the Film 12 Project Outline for details.  In your final project you are permitted to go back and make another film in a category you've chosen previously. After the completion of this film there will be a viewing class to see all the finished films. See the Film 12 Grading Rubric for information on how this project will be evaluated.  Start by filling out the Pitch A Project form for approval by your instructor. Export the movie and copy it to the Film 12 Hand In Folder on the Network. 

14. Film Sequence #2: Chase Scenes - WEEK 7, Oct 13 - 17

Toward the middle of your preproduction week, you will receive a small shooting assignment (a sequence) with a goal of learning a particular aspect of filmmaking. Your instructor will elaborate on what it is during that week.

15. Forest Gump: Example Shoot and Edit - WEEK 7, Oct 13 - 17

In this class assignment, we will shoot a popular scene from Forest Gump to learn about film production. Film 12 students will be responsible for mentoring together the completed scene. Familiarize yourself with the Forest Gump Bench scene. Then, using the Forest Gump Storyboards, recreate the scene using members from your class. You can view the Original Scene here.

16. Class Film Shoot: Indoor Chase Scene - WEEK 7, Oct 13 - 17

Best done on the weekend. Include security camera footage.

17. Project #2 - WEEK 8-10, Oct 20 - Nov 7

18. Working in Film: Set Etiquette & The Film Industry - WEEK 10-11, Nov 3 - 14

During this mini unit you will learn about the film industry in BC, the different positions/jobs for crewing a film and how they are organized, and the proper set etiquette expected when working on set.  You are expected to know the related Film Terminology.​ This unit will be followed up with a comprehensive test on all material covered.  You may review the instructor notes from each presentation here:

21. Project #3  WEEK 12-14, Nov 17 - Dec 5

Choose a project category of your choice to explore during this film (see the list at the left). Note: your first 3 projects must all come from different categories; see the Film 12 Project Outline for details.  In your final project you are permitted to go back and make another film in a category you've chosen previously. After the completion of this film there will be a viewing class to see all the finished films. 22. AFI Top 100 List - WEEK 15, Dec 8 - 12

Take a look at the American Film Institutes Top 100 Movies of all time. Go through the list and checkmark what films you have seen (if any). Then create a thread of your own in the AFI Discussion Channel that discusses the list. Attach your list to your thread. Do you agree with the AFI list of top 100? Do you think films should be moved higher or lower? Are there films missing from the list that should be added? Key in on the films that you have seen and use them for the purposes of this assignment.

23. Combat For Film Assignment - WEEK 15, Dec 8 - 12

Learn how to create realistic and safe fight scenes by completing the Fight Scene Shot Assignment.  At no time should the actors, film crew, or equipment be at risk during an action scene.  If you think that someone or something is at risk, stop and talk to your instructor. Export the movie and copy it to the Film 12 Hand In Folder on the Network. 

24. Project #4 - WEEK 16-18, Dec 15 - Jan 15

Choose a project category of your choice to explore during this film (see the list at the left). Note: your first 3 projects must all come from different categories; see the Film 12 Project Outline for details.  In your final project you are permitted to go back and make another film in a category you've chosen previously. After the completion of this film there will be a viewing class to see all the finished films. 25. Project #4 - Film Portfolio (individual project) - WEEK 18, Jan 12 - Jan 16

In this project, you will  author and create a compilation of all your films you have completed for class.  This is an individual project, each student is responsible for authoring her/his own Vimeo website!  The films on the site may be identical to other students (ie: if you worked with the same people throughout the semester) but the design and layout of the site will be different. Please see the Vimeo Filmography page for details on how to start your Site compilation.

26. Project #4 - Movie Poster (individual project) - WEEK 18, Jan 12 - Jan 16

Your group is also responsible for creating a movie poster.  It can be from any of your 4 films, preference for films that have been shown and/or won at a film festival. Use the Movie Poster page to get started.

27. Film Festival Submissions - WEEK 1 - 18 [Sept - Jan]

Filmmaking involves 4 important phases - preproduction, production, postproduction and circulation. During the circulation phase, you are trying to get your film out to the widest audience as possible. It is HIGHLY recommended that you submit your work to as many of the recommended film festivals as possible. Talk to your instructor for more information.
